Is there anyway I can legally buy or request a new COA wihtout paying $200 or upgrading to 10?

I upgraded a Vista Home prem. 32bit laptop to Win 7 Pro 64 bit but I have yet to activate it.
However, the boot software I used was left over from a previous install, thus the key it came with won't work (it was an OEM install)
I keep trying to buy the key from windows but I get redirected to Windows 10 instead.
Most of the the replacement key support emails are dead.

if I don't get any answers by the time the grace period ends im going linux

That laptop is maybe worth $100 in working shape, spending money on upgrading it and paying $100 for a new OS for it would make you lose about $150+ on the sale. Leave it at Vista, whoever buys it can upgrade to 7 or 10 or leave it, whatever they want.

You can get Windows 7 keys on g2a.com for $20-$60 supposedly. I've bought a LOT of games from G2A and only had one problem(paypal refunded me, but it wasn't fast), but never an OS. Safest bet would be to buy an OEM copy that comes with a disk and sticker from a reputable seller like Newegg/TigerDirect/etc if they still have them.

If you really want to get into Linux I recommend Linux Mint for someone used to windows, Ubuntu has a weird GUI.

Good luck and live long and prosper and all that.

You can try "discount" websites, but you never know what you will get. Some people find they bought a trial version and it expired after 30 days, other got invalid license keys or keys that were ultimately rejected for being obtained illegally. If a copy of Windows is super cheap, there is usually a reason for that and ends badly for the purchaser.

Reading some of those reviews on G2A, I think im gonna pass
another friend recommended trying an activator download and that just gave me trojans...

Im most likely gonna install L-Mint, Cinnamon I guess
Its either that or buy another disk/code combo from the same seller as before on ebay (turned out to be legit)

on a related note, I want to invest as little as possible into this laptop. I was planning to resell it, but, being as its an old laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501), even with upgrades I've made/am making (500GB hdd, 4gb ram, newer OS (had vista), new WLAN card) Im not sure.
But I definitely can't shell out enough to buy a full install.
