computer recognises WD portable hard drive but I can't read the files

I have just backed up my files on the external hard drive. When I try to read them it tells me to find an app to read them. Google store can't find an app to do this. Surely there must be an easier way to read the contents of my files. I am using windows 10

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive.

Could you please provide some more information on the issue? What is the type of data? How are you trying to access it?

Is the drive properly recognized by you computer? You can try it on another that is not on Win 10.

I believe you can even test the drive. Run both short and extended DLG tests: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=evGh5l

Hi. Thanks for responding. Yes the drive is recognised, and I can even see what is on the drive. ...but I can't open any files to see the content. I have tried using it on my laptop, which also uses windows 10....it works without any problems on that

Well, the device that you are having some problems with is laptop/computer right? Is it some other type of device?

How did you back up the data? Have you used some back up software tool?

I believe it would be nice to provide some screeshots on how you see the data as well. Just upload the image to an image hosting website and post the link.
