The manual for my msi z170a pc mate says to wait for a screen that says "press del to enter setup", but it never appears. Holding in delete makes my computer not boot at all.

Turn on pc. Soon as the screen shows anything, spam DEL. Don't hold it, just punch it. If windows starts loading, you missed it, just manually turn off the pc before windows finishes, and try again.

When you finally do get into bios, there are settings to allow for you to see the boot options, and also a timer you can set which will pause Windows start as long as you need, just to get back into bios. Most ppl have this set to 5-8 seconds or so.

the first thing that appears on the screen is the windows login, tapping or holding the delete key through the entire boot process makes the pc not boot at all.

Could it be that my monitor is not detecting the post and the bios as the computer being on, then it could be that i'm accessing the bios but my monitor is just not showing it since it's in sleep mode. that would explain why nothing happens if i try to hold/click delete during the boot process.

You missed it. Post is the Power On Self Test. It takes a few seconds from the moment you hit the power button. Then there's boot options, another few seconds. If the first thing you see is Windows login, you are probably on a slow turn on monitor. No biggie. Turn on pc. Count to 2, start mashing delete as fast as you can. You can sometimes use F1 or F2 usually as well. The option to enter bios is the few seconds between post and windows start. I'd look on the bios, when it finally happens, and make sure you enable visible boot options (turns on directions like DEL to bios etc that you can see) and if it has it, change the timer, make the option longer by a few seconds.

When you use Windows to shut down, it goes into a fast-boot ready state, skips a lot of steps, so boot to Windows is pretty fast. If you start the pc, but before windows actually happens you push the start/reset button, windows will do a full boot process that takes longer. This might help with bios time.

i tried mashing delete after a few seconds, but then the monitor never turned on as seen before. i turned my computer off with the switch on the powersupply, but it still booted very quickly and never showed "hit del to access settings".
