Upgrading GPU or CPU?

Currently I'm running i7-2600K and a R9 280x.
And I'm looking into upgrading my gpu to the gtx 1060 due to it being on sale over here.

Therefore I'm curious if I should go for it. Like, is it worth it?
My monitor asus something 144hz and 1080p, which is the resolution I'm going to play with in the future.

Or would the RX 480 or 470 be better choices?

Solution
The 1060 will give you amazing performance on League and Overwatch. I can't see how you'd have any problems with World of Warcraft if you can run next gen games.

In former time I'd prefer to upgrade GPU.
Your cpu has unlocked multiplier and if you have a mobo with P67/Z68/Z77 chipset then overclock your cpu up to 4.3-4.5 GHz.
Later you could buy new platform (AMD Zen or Coffee lake based). It has a mention based on Intel roadmaps that Coffe lake will have an up to 6 cores.

"ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3, Socket-1155" this you mean? Or?

I'm really unsure how to OC my cpu, because currently it's running at 50-60 degrees celsius when playing games.

Also what GPU would you prefer?

what kind of cooler you have and what kind of case you have?

It is a complicated question. Now the GTX1060 looks better. It looks better in DX11 games. In DX12 games it hase the same performance in most of them, and in Vulkan games it loosing (at now it is a one game - DOOM4).
DX12 looks rawly. Games with DX12 and DX11 support have a better performance in DX11 at the same picture quality.
But DX12 is a main API of the future games. It need some time to determine which is better.

As for me 50-60 celcius degrees looks strange for the watercooling system. Have you checked termal grease?
But you still can try to overclock the CPU to stable frequency without or with few overvolting. Check the temperatures in tests (not a LinX for a day, maybe 10-30 minutes to get a temperature limit). CPU loading in games much lesser than in Linx.
And you can try to speed up fan. (silly advice but...)

Thanks, I will look into it.

Go for the GTX 1060. I own one and they are great.

But if your original question is still in play, GPU or CPU, then we'd need to know: (1) your budget (& region), (2) which website you plan to order from and (3) what are your expectations. e.g. play Witcher 3 in 1080p 60 FPS at ultra settings.

I'm unsure. I'm living in Norway and I'm planning to buy from a Norwegian store because of the warranty I get. I found the 1060 for 270$ and the rx 480 for 300$ here but I'm unsure about what I should do. Upgrading my CPU is definitely more expensive but if that was to be my next concern then I would probably save up for it. Games I play is currently lol, wow and ow. I'm more that type of gamer, but I don't find myself happy with my current cards performance to any of those games. I can play without any problems and stuff but to be honest I'm looking for more. I also tend to enjoy singleplayer games such Dishonored, Dark souls, Middle-earth and so on, and that's why I'm leaning more towards 1060 / rx480.

Its actually a pretty good CPU. It can run Battlefield 4 on ultra settings at 60+
