Desktop boots, then restarts.. then works fine. I'm running out of ideas :(

Custom desktop... ran without a single issue (my most stable build yet!) for about 6 months, then:

MAIN PROBLEM: If computer is left off for more than a few hours, it doesn't boot properly. It turns "on", but not completely... by that, I mean fans and led's on GPU all turn on, but nothing displays on the monitor.

From there, the desktop either:
-reboots after 5 seconds, and then boots to windows
-reboots after about 30 seconds, then boots to windows
-continuously reboots and never reaches windows (I have to either pull the plug or hit the switch on the psu)

If I can get to windows:
The computer works flawlessly. I can game on it, browse, listen to music... anything. I've also just turned it on and left it for a solid two days without it shutting down or restarting. From there, I can shut down/restart as many times as I want without issue. Again, this problem only seems to occur after the machine has been left off for more than a few hours.

Troubleshooting steps I've taken:
-updated BIOS
-updated video card drivers
-removed video card and booted to on board video
-re-seated/tried single RAM sticks in different sockets one at a time
-RAM was overclocked, bumped that back down from 2400 to 2133
-re-seated the CMOS battery
-completely replaced the PSU with a newer more powerful version (It was due for it)
-tried a different surge protector

I've hit the limits of my troubleshooting abilities as I've never had a mobo or a cpu die/malfunction... so I'm not exactly sure what to look for from this point forward. I guess my next step would be the replace one of those parts... but I figured It'd be wise to ask people that know more about this before I start throwing more money at this darn rig.

Mobo: MSI z170A SLI PLUS
CPU: i7-6700k LGA1151
RAM: G.Skill DDR4-2400 (F4-2400C15D-16GNT) usually 16gb, currently only have one 8gb stick in
GPU (system currently running off on-board video): MSI GTX 970 gaming 4g geforce
PSU: evga supernova 850 G2

Sounds like lose of settings in bios thus could be your battery is dead. Could also be a questionable SATA connector or SATA cable on the boot drive. I would first try move the boot drive to a differant SATA port on your motherboard. check bios to ensure its set and try it a while. If still has the same issue get a new CMOS battery.

You ndproxy not loading on boot is your issue for the boot hang. Perform startup repair. Follow these steps:

i. Boot Into 7 installation DVD

ii. Choose your language settings and click Next

iii. Click repair your computer

iv. Choose your operating system and click Next. This should bring up system recovery options.

v. Click on startup repair.

Hm... I'm running into an issue... when I try to run startup repair, I get:

"This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disk that is compatible with this version of windows."

I checked my windows activation key and it matched, I have the same version as the disk. Maybe all the windows updates have made it so the disk can't recognize the os anymore... or is there maybe a setting I could change?

Turn on the pc, instead of going to bios, hit F8 to bring up boot options. What you want is command line with networking. When you get a C: prompt, type in sfc /scannow
This use your current cab files to repair any possible corrupted system files.

Usually, when you shutdown the pc via Windows, it'll automatically save certain aspects onto the boot drive, so when you boot up, it'll already have a bunch of settings etc pre-loaded. If you interrupt boot, power loss shutdown or reset, this doesn't happen. So you get a full complete boot. Hibernation is quite often a guilty party to this process. Saving a corrupted system file, means it'll reboot that same file, causing the fast boot hangup, but using the original file during normal boot doesn't.
Hibernation is for laptops. However, Fastboot uses Hiberfil.sys which is part of hibernation.

I'd not only turn off fast boot in bios, I'd delete Hiberfil.sys entirely and free up a bunch of space on the boot drive.

I'm downloading another copy of the installation media from windows' website... I'll put that on a USB and see if it works that way.

Alright, ran the /scannow, and it said it didn't see any integrity issues. Also ran the command to disable hibernate, but it told me I already had a legacy driver called VgaSave that had disabled it before hand. Hm, just my luck ha.

Now I'm going to try and run start up repair from a USB and see if I have any luck with that, per kilemanjarow's suggestion.

Alright Kil3ManJarow, I got a fresh install media copied to a USB, and booted to it...

The first time I ran start up repair, it said it did find problems... but that it was unable to fix them.

Afterwards, I clicked "view advanced options for system recovery and support", and it brought me to the:

-Startup Repair
-System Restore
-System Image Recovery
-Windows Memory Diagnostic
-Command Prompt

..menu and I clicked "start up repair" again. It said found error and attempting repairs, but said the process could not be completed. When I click "view problem details" I get:

Mate I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I'm going to suggest a fresh install. Also, before hand I would recommend running an SSD diagnostic something like http://ssd-life.com/eng/download-ssdlife.html or if yours came with it's own software to see if you SSD is outputting any errors and also depending on the age and how much data you have written (there is a length of life for SSDs 500gb is usually 1tb - 1.5tb written) you may be in early stages of drive failure, so I would check that before reinstalling an OS back onto the SSD if it does turn out to be an issue.

Hey guys,

So I installed a new SSD... and while I haven't actually installed the OS yet, the computer is still shutting on and off. Do you think it'll subside once I install the OS, or do you think this points to another issue?

I'd not install OS yet. Right now it's a hardware-post issue. Once you introduce the OS you are back to square one. Right now you know it's not a driver issue or conflict, as there are none. I'd unplug everything not necessary. Gpu, all but 1 stick of ram, ssd, hdd, everything but 1 ram stick, cpu cooler fan, 2x psu power connectors and monitor. Reset the cmos.

Desktop boots, then restarts.. then works fine. I'm running out of ideas :(
