Hi. I am using an Acer GN246 144hrz monitor on a GTX970 graphics card for gaming and desktop publishing work. My question is; will I get the full effect of the monitor using this graphics card and how much of a difference will one notice upgrading to a GTX1070, 1080 graphics card? Thanks

Solution
That depends on what you are playing. To get the most out of that monitor you need to go at least 144fps on games. Ideal would be that your graphic card manages above it and you can turn v-Sync on.
So I wouldn´t expect you to get 144fps with Battlefield 1 on 1080p max settings.. I have a gtx1070 and on maximum settings I wouldn´t even get near 80fps at 1080p on Battlefield 1 Beta.
So you have to find a balance between the games you play, and the settings that you play on.
And yes, you will see a big difference between your 970 and a 1070 and even bigger to a 1080. In fps that is. More fps, means that you can increase more settings untill you are satisfied and it keeps up with your monitor vsync on.
And don´t forget that your monitor is...
it depends on your graphic settings and the games you play.
when using a 144Hz display, you're most likely playing competitive shooters, am I right?
when doing so, you rarely need full eye candy and max res, so the 970 should be able to output enough fps

but you can just toggle on the fps counter in your games and have a look how many you're getting.
if you're around 144+ fps, you're good. if not..you might consider an upgrade

the 970 is a fine card
the 1060 is on par with a 980
the 1070 with a 980Ti
the 1080 is well above that

usually a 1060 can be enough depending on the games you're playing
a 1070 will master it without a problem

the thing is, if you feel fine with the 970 right now, then there's no reason to change it. I'm not a big fan of upgrading to the directly next generation.
so it might be worth waiting for a 1160 or a Rx570

the 970 while a excellent 1080p card will most likely not be able to reach the fps needed to fully use a 144hz monitor on most newer games

a gtx 1070 is a nice upgrade, and would indeed allow you to reach the fps needed

IF the rest of your system is good enough

Hi Guys thanks for the swift responses, really appreciate them. I'm actually on a 960gtx as opposed to the stated 970, sorry. Its the standard card in the predator g3 710 with 2gb, as opposed to the 970gtx which has 4gb. The reason I'm asking is, I bought the Acer gaming monitor after the computer, and now am a bit worried I cant utilise its full potential. I will generally be using it for FPS's and dvd's along with adobe suite for work. I can possibly(not sure with pc's) take the pc back in the first week and swap for another paying the difference. If this is possible, I may swap for an HP Omen for 300pounds more which is the exact same build, except for 16gb more ram and the 1070 8gb graphics card. The reason is, I have read a few comments regarding putting a Graphics card upgrade into the Predator g3 and it has some overheating problems, which I had planned to do in a yr or two. So yeah, basically thinking between go for a more suitable gaming pc with the better Graphics card, or risk trying to upgrade the graphics card in the slightly lower spec Predator in a yr or so. Agreed Chegalhavara, I wont have a multi thousand dollar machine to get 144fps on the new FPS like Battlefield1 anyway, just thinking of the best balance to get worth out of the monitor on full res on games like BF4.

Just to add - BF4 running in the test map with no enemies I got 188fps in medium graphics setting, dropping to 90 in High graphics with anti aliasing and then EVERYTHING turned up to FULL I ended up with 55fps. Is this quite ok? Is BF4 turned right up pretty demanding anyway? Ie: dual graphics cards etc.. Just thinking about bang for my buck here. Thanks again

A 1070 will probably manage at least close to the 144fps (if not over, although I doubt it) on bf4 on max settings. You can also lower an option or 2 to high and you will get the 144fps+ needed with very good quality for shure.

yeah well you'd want to stay above 144fps.
especially in shooters you don't need to max everything (especially MSAA adds very little in a fast gameplay situatios like a shooter for example)

with noone on the map you'll always get nice fps, it's when you play on a 64slot server that every filled slot will put some weight on the setup as well

but yes if you got a 960 you should most likely upgrade if your rig can handle it and got the cash.
judging from your fps, you got a decent CPU. a cheap 1070 (no need to go for the overenigneered cards that cost 100 bucks more than a cheaper one that delivers just the same) would be a nice touch.

Thanks for the help. Yep I think Ill be ok for now but definitely sounds like a 1070 for BF1 is in play. Yep the cpu is a i7 -6700. Feel a bit ripped off now as the same shop had a :
MEDION AKOYA X5344 G - Intel Core i7-6700 (3.4 GHz) - AMD RX480 (8 GB GDDR5) - 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD - 16 GB RAM -
So this setup had a RX480 ...is this better than a gtx960? has 4 x the ram...
...for 90 pounds less!

if it's the 8GB Rx480...definitely. the Rx480 performs close to a 980...
a 1070 would do fine in this setup

Damn - so I paying alot for the fancy Predator design when a better setup is far cheaper- no wonder it gets a bad rap..

This is my current setup - Acer Predator G3-710 B1PEZ002 - Tower - 1 x Core i7 6700 / 3.4 GHz - RAM 16 GB - SSD 256 GB , HDD 1 TB - DVD SuperMulti - GF GTX 960 - GigE - WLAN : Bluetooth, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac - Win 10 Home 64-Bit - Schwarz

So it could take a 1070 pretty fine? Cheers

Maybe I should go with the MEDION, and upgrade it to a 1070. Seems the most cost effective choice. Hopefully I can swap the thing. What does a good 1070 go for? Any recommendations on a trustworthy site ? Cheers guys

Cheers,- though I suppose I'd have to open the box up to find that out right? Cant find anywhere online that specifies it's PSU ...
Can't find anything written on the unit itself

He has a point whe he says that the rx480 might be enough.
As far as the different versions from the 1070 there isn´t much difference on performance apart from the sometimes big difference in price. I live in Germany and got my Gigabyte 1070 G1 for 499€ whilst the Asus Strix costs 469€.
If you really decide to upgrade to a 1070 just go with the one you like the most.

With that said, try your rx480 first and see if it suits your needs (and I think it will).

BTW check the PSU that comes with both rigs like Isokolon said. And you can take a quick look on the tomshardware psu tier list here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

Yep. Just looked at comparisons. The rx480 is well above the gtx960. Wonder what the catch is that the Medion with that card and the same everything else is much cheaper than the Predator...

Perhaps the PSU is lower quality, the cables and the case itself. It all translates into cost/money.

BTW you can also compare graphic cards performance here: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

doubt it tbh,
but probably a better drive, nicer case, fancier cooler or sth like that

Thanks. Yep here at MediaMarkt Switzerland might have similar rigs to Germany. Is Medion generally lower end components? If I can swap, which again, I'm unsure about PC's- I'm leaning towards the HP OMEN

hp Omen 870-160nz - PC - 256 GB SSD - 2 TB HDD - Intel Core i7 6700 / 3.4 GHz - Windows 10 Home 64-bit - 32 GB RAM - NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 - Intel Z170 - 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2 - Silber

The OMEN gives me my 1070 without opening up the case, 16mb more ram and 1tb more HD space for less than 500 swiss francs more(450euros) Not too bad....
