Is 1Mbps apartment block Wifi worth it?

Hi,

I'm staying at an apartment-style residential area and they offer 1Mbps unlimited Wifi per block (can't estimate the number of residents but it's about 10 floors high). Would this be sufficient for watching 40-minute videos, torrenting and online gaming (namely Left 4 Dead 2 and MMORPGs)?

Thanks for your help!

Not really. An HD Netflix stream uses about 5-6mb/s. Rule of thumb with WiFi is take whatever you were promised and cut it in half. So realistically you will probably have a 500kb/s connection. Even at promised speeds, downloading a movie for example would take over an hour.

If it is free take it, but you won't do as much as surfing the news, some social networking (a bit slow) and emails. Youtube in perhaps 360p if it works.
I have a 3-4Mbps connection (which is slow) and I can use it with 720p youtube and netflix but only if no one else is using.

I would recommend to get another internet connection if you want to do some gaming and torrenting.
