The first thing you should do is backup your most important files, just to be on the safe side. After that, I'd recommend that you give the drive a go with a different USB cable and a different computer, to see if the issue still persists. Download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool and run the tests, to see if anything alarming pops-up. Note that the long/extended tests could take from a few, up to several hours since the drive has a pretty large capacity. If everything seems fine, I'd suggest that you try running defragmentation on that drive and see how it behaves afterwards (again, it will take quite some time if you have a lot of data on it).
