Hey guys,
I want to upgrade my old AMD phenom ii x4 965 which was a beast. Now i really cant decide between i5 6500 vs FX 8350 (or) i5 6600 vs i5 6600k vs FX 8370 ! Yes Intel cores are powerful than AMD cores but what if some CPU intense future games require more than 4 or 6 cores and in that case what happens with i5 ? Can i5 handle those games without any drop in performance ?

Solution

The 6500 will be a huge difference in performance, and yes for Gaming thats a far better choice. A better GPU will always do more for you in gaming than a slightly better processor.

There is no decision point here.

The i5 demolishes the FX in every task except Zipping and unzipping files (and even there its a small margin). And while yes the FX has more cores, they are old architecture and lower IPC, so even as programs and games start to need them, the I5 will still do it faster.

CPU intensive games will still prefer faster more efficient cores over more of them, even games that scale to more cores.

The i5s all crush the FX outright in games. There's no new FX CPUs coming out. With the i5 you could still upgrade to an i7 if you really needed more cores.

You'll also lose better non-gaming system performance.

It's still extremely unlikely games are going to use more than 4 cores for a long time, any benefits to multicore cpu usage will also greatly benefit Intels quad core CPUs being able to work at full strength.

Also, any game developer who makes a game that requires more than 4 cores is a complete moron because they'd be screwing themselves by cutting out the vastly larger Intel 4 core/thread install base that already exists.

Just look at the steam hardware survey, Intel is 70% of the CPUs on the market, 92% of CPUs have either 2 or 4 cores.

If you make a game that required more than 4 cores, only like 2% of gamers could play on it.

Thanks guys. Now between i5 6500 vs i5 6600 vs i5 6600k which offers good price to performance ratio and will handle games with solid performance for another 3-4 years ? Is the performance difference between these three are noticeable or only a little ? 6500 is in my budget and for 6600 i have to stretch a little and for 6600k have to really stretch.

The 6500 is fine and should be for a good while. CPU speed breakthroughs are few these days with the slowing of Moores law. The 6600k's advantage is that it can be overclocked, still this isn't going to make worlds of difference in your performance, and if you have to stretch to afford it you are better served putting that money towards a better GPU for a gaming system.

Thanks mate..So A 6500 with RX 480 will be better than 6600 with RX 470 right ? My current mobo is Asus M4A78-EM/1394 with AMD phenom ii x4 965 3.4GHz which served as a beast for me..Will i5 be a good upgrade over phenom and will i notice the difference ? Yes i know Intel cores are powerful than AMD but i would like to have the guidance of experts
