Need some help in selecting SSD with mobo

Probably a dumb question, but what is the better option? I'm planning to get the ASRock Z170 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard and a SSD. Do I need to get a M.2 or 2.5" SSD? What are the pros and cons?

Some say M.2 SSDs perform better.

The prices between the two types can vary.

M.2 takes up a slot directly on the motherboard, 2.5" ssd needs a drive slot and a sata slot on the motherboard (both of which will usually be there / abundant in your build)
