I was thinking about starting a new build using the FX-9590 as the processor but it seems that it is only compatible with some ATX mobos. Why is this? Why can't it be paired with a mATX mobo with the AM3+ socket?

Please don't waste your money on a 9590, by the time you buy an adequate cpu cooler and a proper motherboard you could easily by an Intel system that's faster, runs cooler and uses alot less power.

The FX 9xxx series requires alot of power and the few mATX AM3+ boards available use very weak VRM phases that struggle(and often fail) to run a 125w CPU and are likely to just catch fire with a 220w cpu.

If you are a diehard AMD fan and refuse to use Intel do yourself a favor and wait for Zen and pray the Hype is atleast close to the real results and not another bulldozer.
