will the hd 5850 work well with SilverStone Strider Essential 500W ST50F-ES230 PSU. I have been searching around and this is the best priced power supply i could find.
Thanks,
Asher

Will it work? Yes.

Radeon HD 5850 TDP is 151W and suggested PSU is 500W with 2x 6-pin PCIe power connectors.

Though, yor preferred PSU is a Tier three unit.
PSU Tier list: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

Try to get a Tier two unit. I suggest either a Seasonic S12II-520 (80+ Bronze, fully wired, Tier two)
specs: https://seasonic.com/product/s12ii-520/

Or Seasonic M12II-520 EVO (80+ Gold, fully modular, Tier two)
specs: https://seasonic.com/product/m12ii-520-evo/

would the Thermaltake TR2 S 550W 80 Plus Power Supply be any better?

No, that one is also a bad unit.

I gave you a link to PSU Tier list. Go and check it out. There are many good Tier two PSUs listed there.

Keep in mind that when it comes to PSUs, you can't have great PSU with cheap price. Cheap PSU may be tempting but once it dies, at best it goes quietly, at worst it fries your entire system.

It's cheaper to buy a good power plant that lasts for several years. Rather than using the cheap firecracker that can fry your entire system and you have to buy completely new build.

The Seasonic S12II-520 that i suggested to you is rated to last for 150.000 hours, which makes 17 years.
Btw, my old AMD build is using the very same PSU. And my new Intel build is using Seasonic M12II-850 EVO.

To help you out, here's a full pcpp list of Seasonic PSUs starting from 500W and the list is ordered by price (in USD),
pcpp: http://pcpartpicker.com/products/power-supply/#m=71&W=500,2000&F=0&sort=a9&page=1

well seeing that i am upgrading an old i5 750 machine to be able to use an old hd 5850 would it really be worth spending more than 50$

Put another 5 bucks to it and you can get Seasonic M12II-520 EVO for $55.

The nice part of it is that when you buy a new system, you can reuse your Seasonic PSU without the fear that it fries your new build.

But if you don't care about your old system and the power issues that you may face with cheap PSU, you can buy your SilverStone Strider Essential 500W ST50F-ES230 PSU and save 5 bucks.

I live in Australia so it is actually a significant difference in price between the two over here, but thanks anyway. I think that if the power supply lasts me 2-3 years in that particular build that will be fine.

Thanks,
Asher
