A couple of thoughts:

*Try using a 32bit version of a distribution
*Use one that has a light weight desktop (Xubuntu, Lubuntu or something with LXDE or XFCE)
*Try Puppy Linux. It's super light weight and has booted up on anything that I've tried to run it on.

Those suggestions could be a waste but they don't hurt to try. The blurry screen suggest to me (though I could be wrong) that it's graphics related. When it's blurry, can you hit CTRL+ALT+F1 (bails out of the GUI) and have everything look ok?

Hopefully some smarter people will also chime in...
