Hey i'm having a heck of a time here so looking for some help.

Can any one tell me what this means and why it wants some kind of command prompt? From what i read i should just be able to boot from and install, more or less plug and play. There is a hard drive in the machine which i want to put linux on but this screen keeps coming up and just hangs becuase i have no idea what it wants me to type.

The system was an ebay find fx160.

I would make sure you have the latest bios for your motherboard if you have not already. It could be your USB driver is not fully recognized by the bios. I have had USB drives almost work, but with errors. If you have a different USB drive lying around you may try that. You might also attempt to use a different boot program or maybe type in "setup" or figure out what the default installation file is called. If you have burnable CD/DVDS you might try using Image burn or a similar program instead to create an iso image. You may have also downloaded the wrong installer which would actually be my guess. Ubuntu has several, including a PXE (network) installer, and a command line installer. Double check that you obtained the proper...

Is Ubuntu already installed on the drive or are you trying to install it? To install: You will need a bootable USB drive. There are a number of ways to obtain that. Ubuntu's website has more than enough information about how to install it and recommends a boot program to help. I forget which one it was. Are you using the most recent build? What is your hardware?

What you see on the screen is a very basic OS, FreeDOS. A sort of clone of MS-DOS.

How did you create your Ubuntu USB?

So it turns out that it was the bootable program wasn't making the usb correctly. How, why; not a clue. I picked up another called universal usb installer which did the trick. From what i can tell, Rufus(recommended by Ubuntu) wasn't actually putting the whole iso image in the flash drive when it created the stick.
