What software to use on a Dell PowerEdge 6950 0FR933

Windows Server, as mentioned, as well as Linux. They gave you a couple of versions in that PDF.

Windows 2003 is a little dated to be playing around with, technically no longer supported. Windows 2008 is going to be the oldest you should be seeing. Windows 2012 is likely your standard Windows OS you would find in an enterprise environment. 2016 is quite new, and would only be for very new projects or software, ones that probably need the latest SCCM or SQL Server.

Server motherboards aren't terrifically different from consumer ones, and it really depends on what you are comparing.

Servers generally have more remote access capabilities, ecc memory, support for multiple physical CPUs, encryption, and other enterprise features.

You'll probably want to stick with Windows Server 2012 or 2016 or some flavor of Linux. Looks like that board supports up to 4 physical CPUs?

I would have to check if Pro/Ultimate support more than two. Either way, you wouldn't find a enterprise class system running the consumer versions of Windows.
