New power supply shuts off every time I try to turn it on.

I am using a prebuilt computer from HP.
The PSU was 400watts with 4 rails. There was a 20 pin cable running to the motherboard, a 4 pin cable running near the CPU, and a cable for the hard drive. Those were the only things that were connected to the PSU.

I got an EVGA 600W PSU,

1. I connected the 20 pin cable to the motherboard,
*IDK IF THIS IS IMPORTANT* The 20pin cable has a 4pin cable attached to it but there is no 4 pin receptor on the motherboard. Right now that cable is hanging by itself.

2. There are two 4pin cables attached to eachother labeled CPU, I plugged this into the 4pin cpu receptor on the motherboard.

3. I took one of the two multiple harddrive cables and plugged the hard drive in.

When I turn the computer on, the CPU fan spins a tiny bit for a few seconds and then shutsdown. There is some green light on the motherboard that would light up whenever the old PSU provided power to it and it never is lit with the new power supply.

I tried the old PSU and it worked again booting windows, I tried re-connecting the new PSU and it did not work.

*IDK IF IMPORTANT* The 20pin connector has an empty connector spot where there is no wire, 3 wires down on the side with the clip, on the left side if the clip is facing me?

Anything I am doing wrong?

Thanks.

It hurts to know the truth :( but thanks because I had no clue.

Is it possible to only power a graphics card through an outside power supply?

I tried the risky maneuver of using the new power supply to only power the graphics card. The system turned off after 5 seconds.

Afterwards, I tried the original graphics card without the new graphics card, and I tried powering only the hard drive with the external connection, and again after 5 seconds it turned off.

Does trying to run a PC on two power supplies always work? Or is it an HP thing? Or a bios setting?
