5 Beeps From Motherboard Speaker

I've been moving my cpu around a lot. It has been moved a total of like 6 times before this error started occurring. So, I've got 2 motherboards. Both working with this CPU at some point. I've been planning on selling one, but can't really decide which once, because of other issues. I moved it into a motherboard and now I get 5 beeps on both motherboards. I checked the triangle lines up. I checked the cpu fan was connected properly. I checked the 4 pin / 8 pin was connected properly. I checked the power supply was not the issue (I've got 2 power supplies). I've tried disconnecting everything and reseating it. I've tried disconnecting everything and just leaving 1 stick of ram and the cpu in. I checked to make sure pins weren't bent. I've tried everything I can think of, but I still can't get it to boot on 2 motherboards. It's a 6700 on a Gigabyte H170M D3H and Gigabyte H170 Wifi. I'm using Corsair Vengence 2666MHz DDR4. Below are some very specific PCPartPicker links that show exactly what hardware I'm using to test. Also below are some pics of the motherboards. The one it appears to be installed in is the Gigabyte H170M D3H. I took a picture of the other one while empty to show that none of the pins are bent. If needed, I'd be happy to upload more photos. In case, somehow, it is heat related, I will try tomorrow and see if it is at all resolved.

According to this... http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm is seems to be a CPU issue. Do you have access to another CPU that you can try?

According to http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5490# this motherboard only supports DDR4 up to 2133 mhz. (It will run 2400mhz at 2133), So you certainly couldn't enable XMP and expect it to work. Anything outside that is a crap shoot. Have you got access to some slower DDR4 you can try?

Nope and Nope. I don't have access to another CPU and I don't have access to slower ram. I don't believe RAM is the issue because for one, it has 5 beeps, two, I've been using the same RAM in both motherboards without any issues. I do believe it to be the processor, but the real question is how do I fix the processor? How can I, for example, clean it?

Thanks for helping so far though. I haven't been so lucky on my previous threads.

The only thing you can use on a CPU is low pressure air (Like you can buy in a can). Don't try to wipe or rub anything on the pin side of the CPU, obviously. Have you got anything that can magnify the CPU so you can get a close up look at it to see if there is any damage or muck on it?

I've never actually had a CPU die on me. Not a cheap component to replace :( Not looking good for the CPU though. Unlikely that two motherboards would fail at the same time.

The ram was running at 2133 though, right?

So, I'm uploading some more pics of the CPU and the socket to the same album. I tried to get close ups on the connectors and the pins of every angle and lighting I could. It still won't boot after reseating it again. I haven't done the air solution yet, but just to make sure, you're talking about using that compressed air that people use to dust their PC's on the bottom of my processor? That sounds like a bad idea to me just because getting anything on there sounds like a bad idea, but I would do that as a last resort (which I'm getting close to) if necessary.

I am not looking forward to having to buy a new CPU and if I end up needing to, I think I'll wait to see what Zen has to offer. I have another computer that I can use, but compared to the one I just broke, the thing is ancient. It has 3GB of RAM and I'd have to live with that until Zen comes out or I just give in and buy an i5 or i7 again.

I would hate to suggest you do anything you're not comfortable with. The point is you can't use any chemicals or materials of any kind. And I did say low air pressure. It's highly unlikely this is going to solve anything. Grabbing at straws really.

Really, your best bet is to find a friend, retailer or someone else who will let you insert your CPU into their motherboard. We know it doesn't work on yours, and if it doesn't work on someone elses MB then there's a good chance it's faulty.

May be even take the motherboard and ram to a store where you have a good relationship, or where you bought it (if you can remember, or they are still around), and get them to test. Some retailers might not test it unless you bought it from them.

If you've been through the process of elimination with everything unplugged adding things back one at a time, and nothing will work, then you really have no where else to go.

Generally speaking things fail in roughly this order: Ram, GPU, Motherboard, cpu (at least in my experience).

I think I damaged it moving it from Motherboard to Motherboard. I don't have any stores that I have ever been to in person to deal with PCs at all. I've only ever bought online. Unless there is some kind of warranty I can claim it seems like I'm out of luck. Are you sure that I can't rub something on the contacts of the CPU? It is flat so as long as it makes contact with the pins in the socket it should work right? I don't know what to do. Like you said, I'm grabbing at straws. If I don't do anything I have a dead CPU, but if I do the wrong thing, I may have a really really dead CPU. I don't want to do the wrong thing, but I'm willing to take some risks at this point. I can't even sell it on ebay as dead because I'm under 18 and nobody will sell it for me.

Skylake debuted Q3'15. Intel warrants boxed CPUs for 3 years. Your CPU should be under warranty.

I would find your proof of purchase (The reseller should have a copy if you can't find yours), Request an RMA detailing what you have tried and return it for replacement.

I would not rub anything on the CPU pins side. You'll either bend or break pins, or leave traces of whatever you use on the pins, or at the base of the pins and that will just make things worse, and you will risk your warranty.
