How do they do it? like how people play together in different computers but on the same game like DOTA. Is there a cable connected to these pc's so that they can play together?

Solution
Warcraft 3, which runs the MOD/custom game Dota can indeed be played in LAN mode by having multiple computers plugged into a router/switch. Hell, both connecting to the wifi should work.

There might be additional roadblocks though, such as the windows firewall automatically blocking WC3, and you'll have to add an exception for this.
Your virus scanner might have a problem with it as well.

If you are referring to people playing in the same room, then most of the time they are simply connecting all the computers to a router. This can be done with wires or wirelessly although wired is always preferred as it is more stable. The game has to support LAN play though.

Hubs have been extinct for roughly 15 years, network switches is what everyone uses.

The difference between a hub and a switch is that hubs broadcast whatever they receive across all ports, which wastes tons of capacity and causes traffic collisions on the wires that ruin performance. Switches keep tabs on which MAC addresses are reachable on each port (MAC table learning, most consumer-grade switches can track at least 1024 addresses) and only forward packets to the port the destination was seen on. The only times where a switch broadcasts packets is when packets have a broadcast destination address and when the switch does not know what port the destination is on yet.

The setup is usually though your router. If you have enough plugs in yours that will work, otherwise you'll have to add a network switch (do not add an additional router, that needlessly complicates things)

But please keep in mind that not all games come with a LAN function and unless you are way beyond asking this question you will not get Starcraft 2 to run locally.

Yes i am referring to playing in the same room. So you are saying that chord is way more preferrable, can this be done by using ethernet cable connected to both computers and i can play game in lan just that?

I have an existing computer and i am planning on buying another one, so there will be only two pc's in our house and not planning on adding more. So would it be too overkill to use switch rather than a router? My router has multiple lan ports available for one more computer.

So using an ethernet cable connected to both computers will likely able me to play games in lan? No more tweeking needed in both computer's settings? The game i play in lan though is just DOTA

DOTA is an online game, both PCs require an internet connection. This is usually done by putting a broadband router between the modem and LAN computers. Most routers have four ports for wired PC connections and you would connect both PCs to the router using a cat 5e or better Ethernet cable.

Sorry, i clicked you as the solution accidentally.

I was referring to the old dota not the dota 2. Old dota can play lan w/o net. So using ethernet cable will do the thing for me to play lan in my two pc's?
