Can i upgrade my i5 460m to i7 640m? is it worth it?

Hi and Good day!

I just want to ask if i can upgrade my laptop from i5 460m to i7 640m and is it worth it?? Please someone help me... my laptop is Sony VAIO VPCEC3DFX/BJ and i will add a picture of CPUZ of my system... Because i found i7 640m on ebay for $40 - $60...

It was absolutely worth it. I use that computer every day (also SSD and 8 GB RAM) and it made a noticeable difference in web browsing, etc. The 640m has a stock clock 400 MHz higher than my chip, and turbo boosts 800 MHz higher. That is enough to notice a difference!

The Nehalem chips just run hot, and as it's a thin laptop, the cooler pipe isn't the best. Make sure you get a decent thermal paste.
laptops can be tricky even if it is the same socket. if the laptop never had the option of coming with an I7 then it may not support it because of the BIOS is only coded to work with certain CPU's

but if that I7 is a 6th gen CPU and the I5 you have is 4th gen as it looks like from the model names then it will definitely not work

 


keep in mind you did this with a dell laptop and he is trying to do it with a Sony Vaio which means there is still no guarantee it will work
