Hi
I have two PCs with 10 Gbe NIC adapters and they are connected directly by an SFP+ cable. I am trying to transfer data between the two computers and I have managed to share files across the network but I am only getting very slow transfer rates, 18 Mbps, I was expecting something much much quicker...
Does anyone know how to speed up the transfer? Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!

Solution
Try the brute force method. Load IPERF on both machines. It is a very old linemode command. It is extremely small and run entirely from memory so disk performance will not impact it. This should show if your problem is in the network part of the machines or something else maybe disk or file related. I have never run it on 2 machines with 10g back to back so I am not sure how fast it will even run. It will go well above 1g from testing I have done in other configurations.

Hi - thanks for replying! Not sure what you mean by specs of the PCs but one is running Windows 10 and the other one Windows 7 - would any other specs be useful to know? Both the hard disks are SSD drives so I thought that wouldn't make the speed as slow as 18 Mbps...?

Hm, if they have SSDs they should be pushing more than 18MB/s (if it is actually 18Mbps i'd say something is broken, but i think you mean 18MB a second)

It really depends on the files though. Try transfering them from USB and back again, much faster?

I am transferring a lot of .tif files...
When I transfer the data onto an external hard disk via USB3 connection, I can get over 100 MB/s (Yes, I meant 18 MB/s! - sorry!).

The machines chocked at the sight of such super high bandwidth highway. :D

Something is definitely wrong.

1. Be sure W10 LAN driver is W10 certified. The drivers may have to come directly from NIC vendor.
2. Never was rich enough to work with 10G/SFP, do they have like LED indicators like RJ45? how fast do they say the link is running? Right click on NIC Property box should also give you the information.

I checked the drivers, I think they are compatible. I am using INTEL (R) 82599 10 Gigabit dual Port Network connection drivers, it is the same on both computers. They have the LEDs, and they flash green when things are transferring so I think that is working, I disconnected the ethernet cables so that they were only connected to each other via the SFP+ and the transfer worked but again, slow. If I right click on the NIC it says under link speed 10 Gbps Full duplex on both computers...

The transfer speed of small files when comparing to a large file will be slower.
