Graphics Driver Problems

Okay so i've tried just about everything I can think of or find online, I just recently built a computer, my first. I have a GeForce GTX 1070 GPU, Intel i5-6600K processor, MSI Z170A gaming M5 motherboard, 16GB RAM, and a 500GB SSD. At first when I installed windows I let it do it's update and when I went to restart, it constantly crashed at the windows logo screen, I didn't know what it was at first, but I narrowed it down to the drivers for my Nvidia Drivers. I stopped those from installing and windows updates just fine, now when I try to install the drivers it either crashes halfway through the install, or by some miracle it installs, everything is fine, and then when I restart it does the same crap, it crashes at the windows logo. So I have to go into safe mode and uninstall the drivers with DDU and then it starts fine. So I know it's the drivers that are causing it, but I don't know why or how to fix it. Worst case it's actually the Graphics card causing the problem and I have to replace it, but I really hope that's not the case. Any help would be appreciated.

Nice! Glad to hear you got it figured out.

Remember next time you need help though the more information you give the better the chance of figuring it out quickly, the kind of crash tells you a lot about the problem.
Hopefully there won't be a next time for a while lol.

Ah, it looks like this is a relatively common problem with this card. It looks like it affects less than 5% of users. But still a relatively common problem. If you have not yet I would contact EVGA and try to troubleshoot with them and if necessary, RMA it.

It looks like most people have better success with the second card, but it is a problem with that particular card, unfortunately.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Yeah, sorry to hear about it. I'm pretty surprised too, this is the first time i've heard of an EVGA product not being very solid. But their customer service is very good, i'm sure you won't have much trouble getting a replacement.

Good luck.

This is a totally 100% new build?
I would take out the card entirely, plug into the integrated Intel Graphics, do anything you need to do install any drivers, update any software, etc. Then completely remove any trace of NVIDIA drivers or software and try to install those from scratch.
I believe you should have a USB or CD with all the drivers on it, load all that, then shut down, unplug, install the GPU, plug it into your display and hope for the best.

WCS, buy a cheap seagate HD, they are like $20 at Best Buy and should have enough space for your boot stuff, and try it again from scratch. I know thats a huge pain in the ass but we're getting down to last resort tactics.

Absolute last resort is to get a new card altogether. I have my own personal list of favorites if you're interested.

I'm working on fresh OS install right now without the Card. I just got the replacement card today, so I'm starting to think that isn't the issue, but again i'm no expert. And yes this is completely new. Once I'm done with the fresh install and all of my drivers for my motherboard and processor are all installed I will try again and update you.

Well I installed the OS over again with my new GPU and same issue. I talked to a buddy of mine, and we think it may be the power supply. To clarify, when it crashes there is no error or anything, everything shuts down completely, like all of the lights and everything on my MB go out. Since my card doesn't work with either PCIe slot on my MB we also don't think it's that. Does the PSU sound like a plausible problem?

What model and wattage is the PSU?

Well regardless, if everything shuts off when it crashes that does sound like a power issue.

BUT: if you're getting an error code on your MB, thats indicative of the card being the issue again. Unfortunately that means RMAing again but imo, I would just get another brand.

It's a Corsair RM 650X. I know this is plenty if power, but it's about the only thing I can think of now. And there's no error code when it crashes, everything just shuts down.

Hmm. If you can, put a different PSU in and see if that works, might be defective, if that doesn't work I would say GPU again, it's not unheard of to get two defective cards in a row.
Borrow one from a friend or you'd have to take it to a repair shop.

Well good news, went to the computer shop and he tested a different psu, everything worked perfectly and he got the drivers installed and even ran some benchmarks and really pushed my rig. New psu will be in tomorrow. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Yeah, I didn't realize that kind of difference until my buddy pointed it out that, that was very much specifically power problems. Now I know for next time, still new to this whole thing haha. Thank you so much for the help.
