Hi all,
I wanted to know if upgrading from r9 290 4 gb to rx 480 8gb will be worth it?

Currently i can almost run all games on ULTRA except for may be two or three options on HIGH and have fps dips here and there. i was wondering if rx 480 will be of help there

My other specs are

i5 4690K @ 4.4ghz
16 GB RAM
r9 290 4gb
I am gaming on 1080p 60hz

Solution
looking here and using the excate same games run [notice how few same games were tested and how few same resolutions were used and then look at each cards test set ups as well ,hint hint]

I cant see the cost of the upgrade between the 2 ??

like here for crisis 3 one of the few same games used in the reviews at 1080 the 290 did better so to say ? but see 4xx was used on one and not the other in that

you got to take all tis ''HYPE'' with a grain of salt lets face it the 290 is no slouch and will have as full dx 12 support as the 400 series so amd claims

in my opinion I would just bop that 290 till she drops then go get a new card

don't forget how with the 300 series how the 380 was just equal to a r9...

Its not a huge jump but it is faster. The RX 480 is closer in performance to the R9 390X.

Personally I feel if you plan to sell it you can still get decent money for it now, and swap over with a total net cost to you of like say $50 or so, its worth it.

The R9 290 uses the old architecture from the radeon hd series. The rx is all new architecture.

Why do you think you will be loosing fps? its a better card that can do more than keep up to the r9 290.

There are no games the R9 290 beats the RX 480 in. I don't know where you saw that but its incorrect.

The 290X is still consistently faster than your card in any test. Also the RX 480 is generally faster than the 290X here.

Also i don't trust those random youtube guys one bit.

As i said its not a huge difference, but if you can sell yours and buy an RX 480 for a minimal additional amount its worth it. If you are spending $250 to buy the RX and not selling your card to offset the cost its not really worth it.

i agree, true i dont think i can sell my r9 290 for more than 200 here. new rx 480 is about 445 so i will have to spend about 200ish $

Sell it on ebay. You could make money that way. First have it as the price you want if that doesn't work add free shipping. Still no buyers lower the price. If that doesn't work than set it up as a auction with 2 weeks of time. But of course you dont have to.

don't forget how with the 300 series how the 380 was just equal to a r9 285 and the 280x was stronger card ?

in the end all you can do is what you decide is best for you and your needs I cant see spending 200 bucks for a slight gain if any at all

good luck
