I am looking to replace the 1TB stock hard drive with a brand new Samsung EVO 850 250GB SSD. What I have been trying to find and figure out is the process in which I should undergo in installing the drive the right way. I have a USB-to-SATA cable.

I currently have the most updated version of Windows 10. Obviously I do not want to lose my license key to my version of windows, but when the new drive is installed, I want it to be absolutely clean, with no programs or anything attached, only the version of windows itself. How can I achieve this? Should I factory reset Windows on my current hard drive, then begin to install the SSD?

Thanks for the help in advance.

You should just do a clean install of the OS on the new drive. No...

You should just do a clean install of the OS on the new drive. No reset or anything.

1. Create your install media with the MediaCreation tool
2. Find and save all the needed drivers for your hardware
3. Take the old drive out
4. Put the new SSD in
5. Boot from your DVD or USB, and install on the new drive.
6. Assuming your current Win 10 is activated, a new install on the new drive does not negate that. When it asks for the license key, "I don't have one"
Later, when it is done and online, it will activate on its own. Your system info is already registered at homebase.
It will activate.
