99% cpu usage when gaming

Doesn't seem to matter what game i play my usage sticks at 99% when gaming. Memory usage is no where near max when gaming.

Why is this happening? It's causing my games to lag/spike Only other thing open is firefox...

i3 4170
GTX 750ti
8GB RAM

The graphics card and RAM are less than 6 months old. It didn't used to do this so i'm wondering if i somehow fkd something up when i was replacing parts... pc works fine though

It drops to around 80% when i close the game

That is normal because most games can use 2 cores and 4 threads fully.

Yep, I can second this.
The i3 isn't that powerful, and given the demanding nature of most games nowadays it is likely pushing both to their max performance.

But i didn't have the spiking issue in this one game i play a few months ago....

And is it normal when i dont have any games running? I'm only on firefox atm and its hanging around 85% while going up to 90+ when moving pages etc

Could try advance system care to fix any windows issues. I suggest scanning everything but the 2 drive scans.

I should say before i was playing (Vindictus/ an mmo) and i would get 40-50FPS (60 is the highest) when running dungeons but today i was getting 20-30.

Check task manager to see what exactly is using 85% of your CPU while you're doing nothing.

HP support solutions framework is taking up the most, 50-55% then its my antimalware at 15-20%

HP spiked up to 70% with game closed

You need to shut that out of date HP stuff down. Mostly its bloat ware anyways.

Yep, make sure to uninstall all bloatware that came included on the PC when you bought it, google a guide to what bloatware is, and how to remove it if you need help with that.
It's typically crappy anti-virus programs or OEM software.
