I inadvertently formatted my backup disk on my win 10 system. The format was the quick one. Is there any way to recover the data.

Hey there, ynysderw.

As long as you don't write any data on that drive, you have pretty good chances of retrieving your files via data recovery software. Take a look at the suggestions from this article: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm.
Note that you should install the programs to a different drive as well. This is necessary so that you don't overwrite the files which you're tying to recover. You should use a different drive for the recovered files as well. Basically nothing should be written on that drive until you've retrieved what you need.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

I did this once. I plugged in a USB stick and then I opened up This PC. I clicked on a Western Digital 3 terabyte Elements disc instead of the USB thumb drive and I formatted it. Man did I feel like a Goofball.

Good thing I have several Western Digital hard drives with copies of ALL of my data. It took me a couple of hours to recover, but boy did I feel like a big Goofball.

Thanks for your help, I have downloaded and used the recommended program and it looks as if all the data has been restored. I have not tried to use it but hope fully if I need to restore the operating system all will be OK.
Thanks again.

Don't mention it!

However, even if it sees all the data, I was talking mainly about personal files such as pictures, videos, projects, documents, etc. I'm not sure that any of those programs will be able to restore a fully functional OS, as it was before you've formatted the drive. Anyway, the important thing is that you should at least be able to get your personal data.
Cheers!
