I've watched a couple of youtube videos on how to put in a graphics card, and moreover, I have installed a graphics card on a build identical to the one I'm trying to put in to this build. (AMD A10 5800k in an ASUS F85 v-pro. 850 Watt power supply. Attempting install of R9-270 card.

Getting the card into the slot is not hard. The two videos I watched just show that.

Getting the computer to boot up with the card IS hard, that's where I'm hanging up. I have three things to do:

1. Put the card into the slot
2. Connect the card to the monitor
3. Run the software disk

All I've been trying to do is get proof of life by putting it into the slot, providing it with power, and booting the computer with the monitor still plugged in to its old VGA outlet which where it draws the output direct from the graphics on the apu chip.

Clearly, this is not going to work (I tried with a different card, and thought the failure to post was the lower power supply, so I got a new psu) so I guess I need to know whether I'm supposed to get everything physically installed and then put the CD into the DVD reader and let the computer boot to the CD etc. The instruction card doesn't really help, either.

Advice would be appreciated. The card is DVI to DVI (I have a DVI slot on the monitor) but unfortunately my project will be held up until the arrival of a DVI to DVI cable.

I should note that there is some kind of issue here which goes away when the card is left installed but disconnected from the psu. That to me indicates that the system is reading the presence of a card but that something is wrong with my procedure.

When I attempted an install with the previous card I could not get the computer, while booted with the video card not installed, to read the CD. I haven't tried anything with the CD in this iteration. (This computer does everything else it is supposed to do, including read other CDs.)

thanks for your consideration,

Greg N

They reason you get no display form the APU when the card is connected is because the card takes over and the output comes from it. The motherboard automatically disables the iGPU for the much more powerful dGPU (the 270).

Here are the steps I take when changing GPU's:

Download the latest driver from AMD
Download DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)
Uninstall the GPU drivers via Windows
Run DDU
Install the new GPU
Install the drivers from AMD

If you don't have a DVI cable or a DVI to VGA adapter, then you should just wait until you have one. When you connect the cable to the GPU and monitor, make sure the monitor is set to display via the DVI connection and not the VGA anymore.

If you are concerned that the PSU is not sufficient, please...

the first thing i would do is download the latest driver for the card, then throw the disc in the trash. within windows, you want to uninstall any AMD APU drivers that you have then restart and get into your bios. then i would disable the integrated graphics in your bios, install the card and then install the driver.

oh and by the way, connect your monitor to your graphics card and not the motherboard.

i'm not totally fluent with AMD APUs of the recent past but i'm pretty sure this is what you're going to want to do.

Uninstall gpu drivers
use driver sweeper or the newest program to remove all remains.
shutdown
install the video card.
downlaod the newest drivers once the system starts up and install.

Never ever run the disk. In fact throw it just as far as possible because its most likely old drivers.

If you are concerned that the PSU is not sufficient, please list the make and model of it and we can advise you about it. If this is a prebuilt(i.e. Dell, HP, etc.) computer, please give the make and model of it as well.

As for the driver CD that came with the card, it was likely outdated within a week of being put in the box. They work in a pinch, but it's always best to get the latest from AMD, don't even bother with drivers from ASUS, MSI, Sapphire, or whatever board partner sold the card.

Thank you all. I don't recall, when I installed a Radeon 6670 on the same build, having much of an issue with drivers. But it's been three years, and since I don't do builds 5x a week like some of the people here, I do forget procedures I fumbled through the first time.

=> I'm a little concerned that if I uninstall drivers for the video that I won't be able to see anything at all. And I'm not quite sure that I should mess with the drivers that might also be involved in making the APU work?

Nonetheless I see where the clear consensus is on issue of where to get drivers! I don't mind downloading AMD drivers for AMD products.

But the short answer is that I'm not getting anywhere till I have the monitor hooked up to the video card, and that was something I did not know. Thank you very much.

Well I was inspired by this thread to update the AMD drivers on my downstairs build (not the one I was inquiring about) and with the new drivers my gaming score on UserBenchmark went up from 17% to 18%. Now THAT'S SOMETHING! :)

That's the one. I avoid CNET like the plague, they have so many software downloads that are full of malware.

I stick to manufacturers or official sites as much as possible. Like VLC Video Player is made by Videolan.com and that is the only place I download it from.
