Hi I have the hard drive from an old laptop (motherboard bust) which I would like to access some files on. I bought an external SATA enclosure and it is recognised as D drive when I plug it into another laptop. I can look through the folders but initially the contents were hidden (I was getting a 'folder empty' message). I've checked the "show hidden files and folders" box. Now there is an arrow in the bottom left corner of the folders, but when I click to open them I get an "access denied" message. I've tried to give access to all users, using several threads on this website and others. I've tried copying the files to another hard drive. I'm not sure what to try next. I know the files are there and the computer seems to be recognising them - just not allowing me to open them. I'm a learner so would appreciate some further suggestions, broken down into simple steps. Thanks in advance.

Hi D_Know_WD

Thanks for your helpful reply. I had tried using this tutorial to take ownership and change permissions: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/take-ownership-windows-8 (which I think is the same procedure as in your first link - just updated for windows 8/10)

I found it still a bit trial and error - what I see on my screen is never quite what's in any tutorial!

I'm just reading through the Ubuntu instructions to give your second suggestion a go.

Thanks again
