I recently bought an intel Core i7 4790 for my new pc, however it did come with a stock cooler. I was thinking about buying something like this: http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/cpu-air-cooler/hyper-212x/

I just have a few questions: Will I need to apply thermal paste before installation? And if yes, what is the best method of applying the thermal paste?

Thanks.

You should apply thermal paste. There are lots of methods. None are "perfect", you can use the "bb sized drop in the middle, and a credit card to distribute it, you can use a finger in a plastic sandwich bag to distribute it. The goal is a thin, uniform layer, kind of like a paint job.

The bigger issue is that you may have to swap the backing plate on the back side of the motherboard. If you haven't installed the motherboard then it is trivial, if you have installed already, then you may have to pull the motherboard to install the back plate.

The Hyper 212X comes with thermal paste and instructions on applying. You can get more expensive, or fancier paste. It will drop temps a few deg C. I don't think it is that big a deal, but I don't OC and don't game. Watch a few youtube vids on thermal paste application. Probably Coolermaster has one...
