Got myself Athlon X4 860K the other day and it works great. But, when playing Paladins my PC completely shut downed and knew my PC was overheating. Got myself another cooler and works great but really load, but that doesn't bother me too much. Now I am paranoid if my CPU temp is going to high or not. Tried various of programs, Hwmonitor, Speedfan, HwInfo. Hwmonitor says my CPU is 60-80c but my heatsink is freezing cold. CPU 0 says it's below 20c but CPU 0 Package says it's over 60c and have no idea which I should trust. Also with Hwmonitor, temp under the motherboard category says it's below 40c and I said it earlier that tepm under my CPU is 60-80c.

I have no idea what I should trust. Great if you guys help.

When reporting CPU temp, it is relaying the measurement taken at the sensor on the CPU die, below the lid. In other words, the reported temperature has little to do with what you are measuring on the heat sink. Also, the overall temperature of a CPU is generally reported as the highest temperature reading on any of the cores. Having said that, the X4 860K does run hot.

What heat sink do you have?
Did you apply the thermal paste correctly, yourself?

All of the programs you mention are trustorthy and my personal favourite is coretemp. Ref: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Nothing better than AMD Overdrive for AMD CPUs (though latest versions of HWInfo and HWMonitor are reporting close values to it as well). Just remember Overdrive will show you the distance towards your CPU temp threshold, so if you read 10ºC it means its at 10ºC away from its max acceptable temp.

As cilliers mentioned above, is there any chance you didn't apply correctly the thermal paste? the heatsink should get warm whenever its properly transferring the heat from the cpu.

I also tried Overdrive but I seem to not understand it correctly. Everyone is saying to pay most the attention to Thermal Margin and it's really good if it's high. My Thermal Margin jumps often to 44-45 to 55 and above. So if it's higher then I should worry less?

Also with CoreTemp, is it the right temp in CPU #0? It is below 20c when I am not gaming and haven't checked while I game. Like I said before, I am not sure if I should trust CPU 0 or CPU 0 Package. CPU 0 is below 30 and Package is above 70. Can someone answer me that question?

Played more Paladins and checking CPU temp on Overdrive, HwInfo and Core Temp. Overdrive shows 35-40 something cin Thermal Margin, but both Core Temp and HwInfo shows 30-31c. And I believe that if it shows 40 at Thermal Margin that means that the CPU temp is 60c, am I correct? So which one should I trust?

Thanks for the answer I was looking for! Now I can be less worried of overheating. But I think my CPU max temp is 80c, atleast CoreTemp says that.
