CPU way too hot with water cooler

Hi there,

Yesterday I bought a cheap water cooler to replace my existing stock Intel LGA 1366 socket cooler ( https://dgxtech.com/sales/uphere-technology-all-in-one-high-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler-with-adjustable-120mm-pwm-fan/ )
I managed to set up everything, turned on the PC, and went straight to bios to check temperature. At first, it was fine, it was stable at around 34C so I just left it for a while just so the system could get used to it. I came back in around 30 minutes and there were no changes so I decided to tune it up for a bit and selected one of the default OC settings on my motherboard to change the clock speed from 3.07ghz to 3.7. Again, I left it open for a bit just to notice any changes. After around 5 mins, it went up to around 43C and so I just saved changes and turned on my PC.

Just a few applications managed to load when suddenly the PC decided to shut down and afterwards it turned just turned on. The bleeping sounds just went mental, I must have heard like 7 beeps and there was an error message "CPU fan error" or "CPU fan override" or something similar. Either way, I managed to get into bios and the temperature, shockingly, was around 90C. And then it just switched off again.

So my idea was that overclocking was the issue. I waited for a few minutes for CPU to cool down, and pressed the "reset" button on my MOBO to change any settings to factory default. Anyway, after around an hour, I tried to turn it on again. I went on to BIOS. The temperature started at 25C and in half an hour stabilised at around 34C. Again, I booted Windows, everything seemed fine. Did s little browsing on the internet but nothing major. There was some sort of security update that had to be done so I turned off my PC and wanted to turn it on again afterwards to defragment my hard drives.

For the second time, once I started the system, there were loads of beeps coming my way indicating the very same thing. I went on to BIOS again and the temperature seemed to be around 84-90C and without any hesitation I just turned it off.

So I disconnected everything and after a few minutes decided to look into the case, hopefully to find an issue. I have two 120mm fans, one of them is connected at bottom front as an intake and the other in the middle back with radiator as an exhaust. No issues there, fans were working although they do seemed to be working quite hard due to the noise. I checked if there were any issues with thermal paste but no luck- the paste I applied was pea-sized and evenly spread through the CPU. I changed the three pin slot for the thing that went on top of CPU. Removed and inserted the CMOS. Did a reset on CMOS. Did s reset on MOBO. No luck.

Any ideas?

Solution
If you're going to go cheaper may as well get a decent air cooling unit. That's my opinion.

I wouldn't trust a cheaper water cooler to:
1. Perform
2. Not leak

The loop, as in the pipes that that connect the pump with fan? I'm using the ones that came with it, nothing else. You can check the link. I can take some photos afterwards if needed.

I'm sorry if I didn't understand the question.

Nope, still nothing. The CPU temperature is just increasing once I turned on.
Does it actually matter where I plug it in? Originally I've had the pump plugged in CPU_FAN and the cooler in OPT_FAN. Maybe there is some sort of combination that work better together? I don't know.
Note that I don't have any slots with 3 pins, all 5 fan slots at with 4 pins (with the possibility to connect 3 pinned wires).
I'm starting to give up

Could try replacing the thermal compound, may have too much or too little....Think I'd consider changing the cooler, not familiar with this particular model, but most similar 120s are generally pretty poor and can do better with an H7 or 212 EVO air cooler

@Tradesman
I applied a pea-sized amount of the paste. When I opened it afterwards, it was beautifully and evenly spread, covered nearly all off the CPU. Do you think I should add some more? As for the fan, it runs pretty smoothly and as this is a new one, I wouldn't change anything for now. Thanks for input.

@TMTOWSTAC
I'll try that once I get home, thanks.

Well at the start I tried to just run the PC and go to BIOS to check if anything has changed and turned it off after around 10 minutes. The pump couldn't have been warmer than room temperature. At the same time, those hoses felt a bit warm at curved spot. The CPU temperature was booming, it started at around 45C and every second it increased by a degree or two. When it hit the 70C mark, I just turned the PC off.
Barely any noise was coming out, no vibrations either. And I kept getting the "CPU Fan Error" message.

Thanks for the input everyone. Either way, I think I'm just going to try to get a refund and buy something else. While we're at this, can anyone suggest a similar water cooler for similar price?
Oh and if anyone's still got some suggestions, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case). Thanks again.

You can feel the water flowing through the tubes if the pump is working, turn it on and see if you can feel small vibrations on the water tubes.

If not then pump is probably busted, if so then maybe just not good contact between cpu and cooler...
