Hey Guys,
Suddenly the other day, My computer wasn't able to recognize my ext Hard drive, it would say this drive needs to be formatted. So I went online to find a program to fix this and I came across a program called Find and Mount. So I tried mounting my ext Hard drive through this program and it worked. I was able to read my ext Hard drive and write to it also. So my question is, how do I fix this so that I don't have to use this program to use my ext hard drive every time?

Thanks,
Randy

Hi there randyb79,

I would totally agree with R_1. You need to back up the data stored on the drive.

After that, you can test it with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Observe the SMART report and see if there are any pending/really and uncorrectable sectors. If there are some of these, then the HDD is failing. You will need to replace it, as sooner or later it would become completely unresponsive.

IF the drive is under warranty, just RMA it.

as I understand it Find and mount is a short term solution for retrieving data. it is not meant to be an ongoing solution.
I would use Find and Mount to mount the damaged external, copy everything off to spare storage, verify the copy, test the drive and if good, delete the partition on the external, and finally install a fresh partition on it and copy data back.

Run SMART for hard drive health status. If you faced this issue again then partition your drive and check drive letter path. Sometimes it becomes major cause of drive not accessible. Reformat the drive with newer file system.
