I have SLI 980 Ti's (Zotac Amp! Extremes). Worth it to buy a 1080 Amp! Extreme?

I have two Zotac 980 Ti Amp! Extreme cards in SLI. I also have a pretty good amount of disposable income.

I see there is a Zotac 1080 Amp! Extreme. I can get them for around $630. Would it be worth it to get one...or two instead? Would the performance be that much better to warrant the cost?

I have an i7-4770k and I play in 1440p.

And I would, of course, sell the old cards off to pay for the new cards.

Thoughts? I don't have plans to do anything yet. Just fishing for some thoughts.

i to game in 1440p 144Hz and i upgraded my titan x sli setup for 1080 sli setup and i dont regret it, that being said there is alot of rumors that the 1080 ti will be announced in a couple months in january. you might want to wait and see how it would compare to 1080 sli

Even if you only had a single 980 ti, the 1080 would not be a worthy upgrade since it's a lower tier card.
The 1080ti, when it launches, will be. Won't be faster than your setup in games that support SLI, but you will get rid of all the hassles and compatibility issues of SLI.

a single 1080 beats a 980 ti and has 2 gigs more vram which is good for modern 1440p gaming

I only said it's not a worthy upgrade, not that it's not faster. And even in 1440p 6GB will not become a problem in the timeframe until the 1080ti will be out.

i consistantly use 8 gigs of vram at 1440p 144hz so when people say its not a problem i laugh... try black ops 3 or gta v or fallout 4

Yet those games run very well on the 980ti aswell and it's not the VRAM but the GPU horsepower that is the limiting factor for that card.
Look, the 1080 is 20 to 30% faster than a 980ti. I consider a GPU to be a worthy upgrade if it provides atleast 50% more horsepower, if teh GPU you are upgrading from can already push around 60FPS.
Granted, this is subjective.

Here's my opinion and what I am doing.

A single card 1080 will max out absolutely anything at 1440p and will give you playable frame rates on most games maxed out at 4k. I own one and it is an absolute beast.

From what I hear, 980 Ti in SLI will still outperform a single 1080. Even the Amp Extreme. But really you don't necessarily need more power than that for 1440p.

As a single card setup, the only way you can do better right now is to get a Titan X (Pascal)... at $1200, and only available from Nvidia... way overpriced... save your money.

As other people have said and what I am doing even though I have a 1080 Amp Extreme, is to wait for the 1080 Ti, because it is going to blow away even the Titan X, at a much more affordable price. My Amp Extreme is two months old but as soon as I am able I am going to buy a 1080 Ti AE and sell the old one.

So no buying a 1080 is not worth it for you as you will be paying for needless power if you get a second card and less power if you only buy a single card.

A 1080 Ti will be more than enough in a single card configuration at least for the time being, and will be able to max out everything at 4k easily. Absolutely no reason to get a second one if all you're doing is gaming.

IF YOU ARE VIDEO EDITING ON THE OTHER HAND.
I would get two 1080 Ti's or even 3 when they come out Q1 2017.

I don't think two 1080's in SLI is a big enough upgrade from two 980 Ti's in SLI. In your situation, what I would consider is upgrading your display to an ultrawide 1440p (3440 x 1440 resolution). If you're accustomed to 60 Hz, then you could get a 3440 x 1440 display for $700. If you'd prefer 100 Hz, then you could get such a display for $1,200 - $1,300. Two 980 Ti's could push that resolution and FPS rates very well.

Or two 1080 Ti's Maybe even one) and an ultra wide monitor, he did mention he has a pretty high disposable income.
The best 34" ultra wides run about $1200-1300 so you'd be looking at an easy $2,000 just in a single GPU and ultra wide monitor config.

@EpIckFa1LJoN & @Hlsgsz Good points. I only have a 60 Hz 3440 x 1440 and I'm in love with the form factor: Dell UltraSharp U3415W ( https://amzn.com/B00PXYRMPE ). I've owned it since August 2015.
