What is responsible for Max Ram Limit? (Inspiron 530 Q6600)

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 (q6600) that I recently dug out of the attic. I installed Linux Mint 64-bit on it and upgraded a few parts (hard drive, GPU, PSU) but now I want to repurpose it as a Home Server, which i understand may call for more RAM than I currently have installed.

I would like to upgrade the RAM (currently 2 x 1gb ddr2) to 8gb but from what I have read on the dell website, my model of 530 only supports a max of 4gb of RAM? I do not understand what is placing this limit, since the processor is 64-bit capable and my motherboard (DG33MO3) specs state that it can handle 8gb max RAM.

Was this limit strictly because it came with a 32-bit operating system installed, and thus now void due to my change to linux mint 64-bit?

I would be grateful for any input on this.

Thanks,
sheffielle

The OS can limit it to 4GB or less if 32bit. On your system next comes the mobo and it's limit which can be based on the chipset used or the BIOS as your mobo uses a mobo based Memory controller
