How to choose a HDD

What is the difference between the old Seagate Barracuda 2tb HDD and the new one?

Are these reliable? Is it just plug and play to start using it or do I have to do something with/to it first? Thanks, need a 2tb HDD asap.

Nothing much. Branding and maybe firmware version.

So get the newer one? Once I receive it what do I have to do? Format it? Run a program?

More or less the same apart from firmware most likely.
I'd go with the newer version due simply to my distrust of some higher capacity Seagate drives in years past two of which I purchased in 2012 that died on me (2TB).

Yeah pretty much the same reliability and nah you will be able to plug n play.

Plug it in and it will work the same as any HDD, no setup required apart from the initial format!

Nope, not unless you're willing to spend a significant amount more for a WD Black, which I only really recommend getting if you're going 3TB+ in a single drive.
The 2TB Seagate Barracuda is the best value HDD on the market with great performance.

Just to verify, this hard drive isn't more likely than others to fail on me? I need a good reliable HDD and sorry if I sound like a broken record.

It's just I've seen too many threads about failures and non failures etc that I don't know what's what anymore.
