Hi,

At the moment I am using corsair 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 DRAM 1866MHz ( CMY16GX3M2A1866C9 ), on my PC and I was thinking of upgrading my memory to 32GB. Just wondering if it's possible to mix DDR4 series with my current memory ?
or shall I get the exact same model to have a good performance ?

For your information my motherboard is ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO and my CPU is Intel Core i7-4790.
in general what would be the best option for my case ?

Thanks

Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.
This is more difficult when 4 sticks are involved.
That is why ram vendors will NOT support ram that is not bought in one kit.

I suggest you buy a 32 gb kit that is compatible and keep the old ram for backup.
Go to a ram vendor web site and enter your motherboard.
You will get a list of supported kits.
If you should ever have a problem you will get support.

And... do not pay extra for fancy heat spreaders. They are mostly marketing and can interfere with some...

Sadly, it is impossible to mix DDR3 and DDR4 as they are physically different.

I don't think you would need to upgrade your memory unless you are maxing it out (and I don't mean in Windows cache).

If you really want to upgrade, here is a good 32GB DDR3 kit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233237&cm_re=32gb_ddr3-_-20-233-237-_-Product

I would not recommend mixing memory kits such as buying another one of your 2x8gb Corsair kit and adding it. They probably will not work.

Good luck and good day! :D

Thanks for the quick response!
I'm running Mac OS on my PC and i have few virtual machines running on my system and that's the main reason for my upgrade.
So having two pairs of CMY16GX3M2A1866C9 won't work at all ? or I just get less performance comparing to what you have suggested (CMZ32GX3M4X1866C10) ?

It might work to mix the kits. I really don't recommend it because if you can afford the 32GB kit it will be guaranteed (warrantied) to work.

Do not pay a big premium for faster ram. The faster speed is offset by higher latency negating much of the benefit in real app performance.
Here is a report on haswell ram scaling:
