I have an ancient q6600 and I am upgrading to an i3 6100 and the parts are coming on saturday.

I currently have windows 10 installed but I originally had windows 7 on the PC. If I upgrade my CPU and MoBo, will I need to reinstall windows? The problem is that I don't have an optical disc drive anymore and the only CD I have is with windows 7 anyway. Is there a way to download windows and then copy it on flash drive?

Also, how will I activate it then? Is there a way to see your activation key because at this point I'm not even sure if I can even find my old windows 7 CD.

Sorry if this is a noobish question but I am really confused. Thanks.

Solution
If your Windows 10 install is associated with your MS account these are the steps you can take after upgrading your hardware:

1) Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation
2) You’ll see a “Troubleshoot” option if there is an issue.
3) Click 'troubleshoot' and sign in with the Microsoft account you associated your license.
4) There will be a section for “changed hardware on this device recently.” Select your PC from a list of devices associated with your Microsoft account.

According to me you wont have to reinstall the windows just use "Paragon Backup and Recovery™ 16" download it and make a Recovery media using recovery media builder on a pendrive, sdcard, etc. then after installing new motherboard just use the pendrive to adjust the os according to new board.
Now, the only matter remains about the license. do u have a original licensed copy of windows or cracked???
It dosent really matters if the Paragon Recovery recovers the license too. but in case if it wont then you can just try using the old genuine license key if you have one with your Microsoft account or just use any crack software like "KMSpico 10 ", etc. for activating the windows.

I never heard of that program but I'll give it a try if anything goes wrong.

... and I have the legit version of windows and it is associated to my microsoft account so I hope activation won't be an issue. Thanks a lot.
