speed drop when connected to router instead of cable modem

I have an Linksys EA4500. Currently I get 100+ mbps download and 12 mbps upload from Time Warner Cable when the computer is directly connected to the cable modem. When connected to the router using an Ethernet, router my speed drops to 16 mbps down and 4.4 mbps up. Any idea why this is happening. In the past, I have gotten 35-50 mbps when connectted to the router using an Ethernet cable. The only recent changes is 1) adding OOMA and 2) TWC boosted my speed.

Normally yes. When I did the test, the only device connected by Ethernet cable was the computer. There might have been two cell phones and a printer connected wirelessly but they were not in use. In the past with everything (three cell phones, two Roku, amazon stick, two wired desktops, wireless printer, laptop) connected, I was able to get close to 50 Mbps down. However since that time, it appears TWC raised my speed to 100Mbps (actually 200 but my cable modem only can handle 100).

both router and modem are giving out IP addresses and you might have double NAT which creates basically a double firewall and makes things even slower.

one should the set to Router and the other to Bridge mode, typically you want your modem to be in bridge mode since home routers have usually better network settings and easier to understand.

the switch must be unmanaged so it is not adding any problems you will get the same results. you can try the Cable Modem - Switch setup and you should be able to get 100Mbps download speed.

I tried the modem-switch-comp and could not get it to work. Not sure why. The switch is unmanaged.

The cable modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB6461 which only has one internet output. The router is a Cisco EA4500.

You suggested changing the modem settings to bridge mode and the router setting to what? To be honest, I am not that familiar with the modem settings but I will take a look.

And that is your problem right there. The router WAN port and firmware simply aren't up to the job, and, being a 3 year old product, don't hold your breath hoping for a firmware fix. The entire Cisco/Linksys consumer line now belongs to Belkin, which I wouldn't touch with a ten foot patch cable.

If necessary, I will throw money at it but up to recently the router had no problem supplying 50+ down. The Wi-Fi coverage was excellent and overall the unit has been flawless. When I purchase this router three years ago, it had excellent reviews.

Okay found part the problem but don't understand it. If I turn off QOS (set to prioritize the OOMA (VOIP)), my speeds return to 50-100+ Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. The Wi-Fi speeds are significantly slower. I guess Cisco screwed up the QOS portion of the router.

If I turn in QOS does it allocate a set amount that only a certain device can use or does it prioritize the traffic from the device?

Right now the default setting is 16,982 Kbps. Does that mean 16 mbps is set aside only for the OOMA in my case. When I turn it on my speed drops from 100 Mbps to 16. OOMA recommend 512Kbps in each direction.
