I have a gtx 960 zotac 2gb. Yesterday while I was playing dark souls 3 I heard a loud static screeching sound and the game just hanged and I had to kill the power to restart the pc. When I powered it back on the monitor now showed "Cable not connected". Following points might help you answer the question better-
1. I have this build for over a year so stuff like inadequate power supply and/or other requirements are probably out of the question (feel free to correct me)
2. I plugged in the monitor to the onboard graphics and it worked just fine so the monitor is highly unlikely to be faulty.
3. I have been hearing these screeching noises for over a week now especially when I saw YouTube videos. Then the video player would just stop working but the computer didn't hang.
4. After I turn on the pc the gpu fan runs for 2 seconds then turns off. Then turns on again... and so on.
5. I tried updating my gpu driver (it has been a month or two since I have) but am unsuccessful to do so because the updater software requires the graphic card to be present on board which is not possible because the monitor doesn't work when I plug in the gpu , I have been surviving on the on board graphics.
*Just to be clear the screeching sound did not actually arise from the gpu rather I could hear it in my headphones/speakers i.e. cause of that sound was rather digital than mechanical.
