I have a Canon VIXIA HF R700. I would like to record our church services. I need help with audio. Will a microphone attached to camera help with the hollow sound, or can I get an XLR to connect the video camera to our sound board?
Just get a directional microphone, Such as a shotgun mic, this will reduce the echo and other noises a great deal. The hollow sound is the reverb is the church. just isolate your microphone, or buy the clip on mics that you can clip to your shirt to eleminate the problem. Also use a fury over your mic to reduce background and ambient noise.
Our pastor wears a lapel mic but I'm just unsure on how to hook the camcorder to our sound system. That's why I was wondering if the directional mic would help any

it would help a ton, But it may be easier just to get the voice from the mic on his lapel, you have to route that through your recording device to make sure its on sync, or record them seperatly and take the time to match up the voice to the video.
