So, I have a 34" lg 34um67p monitor that comes with freesync. Here's my delima... I plan to build my very first pc soon and am getting very confused by all the different numbers... I want to be able to game with great performance with no issues (I.e. Screen tearing).

My question is, being I have a freesync monitor should I go with an amd graphics card and use the technology... or is the a just as good way to avoid screen tearing with a gtx 1070 (which I can afford and I know will give me better performance? Does simply limiting the number of frames my graphics card can put out to what my monitor is set to do just as well?
Thanks for your help!

In my experience GSync and FreeSync don't work as well as advertised. They still increase input latency and can cause microstuttering (or in GSync's case, screenlight flickering). Is screen tearing an absolute turn off for you? Because for the longest time it was for me, and I can confidently say getting used to screen tearing is the best adaptation I've ever made (for gaming, that is). Whether I'm playing Rocket League, GTA V, or Shadow Warrior 2, gaming with VSync completely off (on my GSync panel) has made gaming much more enjoyable and hassle-free for me.

But to the point, if screen tearing is an absolute deal breaker for you, go with AMD and use FreeSync. Gaming with traditional VSync is about as bad as you can make your...

So freesync is my best option? I thought there would be other ways other than free sync to solve the issue. Also, is screen tearing as common of an issue as people make it seem?

Ok, and freesync will keep that from happening and make it look smooth? Sorry, I'm really new to this whole pc thing and just don't want to build something and regret the parts I put in it

So basically there is no way around screen tearing and micro stuttering.. and I should just get the graphics card I want and not worry about little screen tearing here and there and enjoy the game? Haha, basically

Well, if you can always keep your framerate at your monitor's refresh rate, microstuttering is out of the question. You'll just have to deal with the increased input latency. Otherwise, if you don't want screen tearing, you'll microstutter everytime your framerate drops below your monitor's refresh rate. If you don't want microstuttering, you'll have screen tearing.

But believe me, the mechanical benefits of gaming with VSync off far outweigh the slight situational image "smoothness" of gaming with VSync on.

Perhaps image integrity is what you care about most, I don't know. But for me and a lot of others, responsiveness matters more, and gaming without VSync is about as close you can get to making a game feel like a simple extension of your peripheral nervous system.

But I guess my biggest point is that proprietary VSync tech (GSync, FreeSync, FastSync, etc) are hardly noteworthy and work pretty similar to basic VSync. And even more to your question: yes, you should get the GPU you want, not worry about screen tearing, and enjoy the game :)

IMO the 1070 is the far better option. If you hate screen tearing, just turn VSync on.

Thank you! Haha I decided I was done with trying to buy a new console every three or so years to play to new games and go with pc. However, trying to understand all of these different terms and individual parts and how to put a machine together to cause the smallest amount of trouble is a lot more than I was expecting. Thank you guys again for your help and knowledge!
