CPU logical cores?

Hello CPU experts, call me dumb or anything, but what are logical processors? I have a Pentium E5700, and has 2 logical processors. What purpose do they serve? does it count as a processor? because I have 2 cores and another 2 logical cores.

Yes, I am on a very old system, does anybody know what's the best processor to get for a 775 socket?

there are phyiscal cores. and a physical cores has logical cores. logical cores are also referred to as 'threads'
for example an i7-6700k has 4 physical cores but 8 logical cores. so 1 core is "hyper-threaded" and runs to independend threads per core which improves multitasking and a few other things.

usually 1 physical core comes with 1 logical core.
so in your case it just means it's regular dual core CPU with 2 threads.

Basically logical core is what the Operating System know as core/thread.
For example, your dual-core Pentium has 2 physical cores which each core has one thread. So you end having 2 logical cores as well.
But when using Hyperthreaded CPUs (in which each core has two threads), as Core I processors you will end having 4 threads (logical cores) in a dual core (2 physical cores) processor.

Hope it is understandable.

The bests 775 processors are the core 2 quad ones. There are also quad core extreme processors as QX9770/QX9775 but they are really difficult to find.
