I have a Crosshair V Formula z and a JVC RX - 600BV. I have noiced that they both have optical output and input and when I hook them together and changed my stereo to CD Digital, no sound comes out. I have the stereos hooked up and both devices recognizes each other, but still no sound comes out. Do i need a sound card? Any feedback is much appreciated.

2 things on top of my head:

1. Sometimes you have to go into Windows Sound Control Panel and specifically select the optical output.

2. New stereos should recognize the signal automatically but if you have an older stereo, the codec you choose may have to be done manually, meaning if the PC is sending out PCM (stereo) and your receiver is told to use a surround codec, you get no sound.

Have you tried it with a 3.5 mm male-male cable?
Also, this sounds stupid, but did you try to turn your volume on PC all the way to max?
You can also try going to the taskbar, right click on that little speaker/soundwave icon in the bottom right, and click "Playback Devices". From there, select the stereo, and hit "Set Default".
