How can I use a PWM (Pulse-with-modulation) fan such as the new Corsair ML120 (which uses 4-pin PWM connectors) on an MSI Eclipse SLI X58 board which only has 3-pin fan power connectors? Or is it not possible.

Yes, I know this board is ancient, but running my Core i7 at 3.3 Ghz with 12 GB RAM, a Samsung 840 Pro SSD and an 850 Pro SSD, it runs pretty well. I am impressed with the stats for the ML120.

Magnetic levitation bearings are used by Phanteks for years.
Furthermore PWM without sudden speedup or stop is an oxymoron

And yes the best department of corsair is it's marketing department claiming they reinvented the wheel. They make great products but it's not the game changer they.always claim

So that means the fan will not receive the proper controls to regulate its speed, right?? It will just run at some fixed speed determined by the voltage.

not exactly. it really depends on your mainboard.
I for example got a Gigabyte Z170X and can regulate the fan speed on 3-Pin-fans with the software provided by Gigabyte and set fixed speed curves dependant on system temperature.
the 3V / 5.5V / 12V settings of 3-Pin fans was a long time ago by now most decent mainboards control 3 Pin fans just as good as 4 pin fans just by regulating power and volts and not using a PWM signal

however it depends on the mainboard.

The ML140 requires a CONSTANT 12V to operate properly. The speed is then regulated by PWM. This fan was just announced and uses magnetic levitation & PWM to provide a very quiet operation. No sudden speedup or slowdown. For $30 US, it is not the usual fan.
