Why is it still so expensive?

I don't understand, the 1080 is almost all around a better card by a decent margin. So why does the Titan X still cost almost twice as much? Is there any sort of tactical sales or logical reasoning behind it?

Or is it supposed to be just more of a status symbol card?

Solution
Basically it's because NVidia can. The Titan's have always been way overpriced. With no competition for the Titan X, there is no reason NVidia shouldn't lower prices.

This is why the GTX 980 Ti and soon the 1080 Ti are/will be very good cards for the price, the x80 Tis have had titan X performance but for way cheaper than the titan.

You must be referring to the Titan X Maxwell compared to the 1080? The Titan X Pascal is only available from Nvidia and is nearly 50% faster then a 1080.

You'll probably still be able to find some Titan X laying around, I think Newegg carries refurbished models still. They'll sit out there until someone buys them (probably thinking they are getting one of the new ones) Terrible marketing on that one. Titan P, Titan X II, Titan XP, not having a named card in the first place. Heck AMD even followed suit with the Greek "Fury" line...

Titans are expensive, but they are catering to people that are willing to spend that much for the most they can get out of a single card.

That is why I went for the 1080 when I did, their future pricing structure looks like it is going to be murder on the wallet. (Not that my 980 investment exactly paid off)

I'm thinking it's also so the x80tis seem like a bargain :))
