+1 on this the power boost from the i5 6400 to the 6500 is major , the 6400 isnt worth it !

First of all you should really look at some reviews comparing lower tier i5s such as 6400 and 6500 vs i3 6100. They lose so much on clock speed, it does not even make sense to buy those if you have a limited budget except for a few spesific scenarios.

To answer your question though, the overall cost of the AMD platform would be cheaper, your use experience especially gaming while streaming would be good enough, but it is really hard to recommend such an old platform that will probably completely be replaced by the next year. So unless you find a CPU-Mobo(990X-990FX + 8350) for $200 combined, it would not be preferable. Then again, you would need a pretty beefy cooler to be able to overclock comfortably, which is not cheap.

For the GPU, 1060 all the way.

However, I have to agree with most people here that getting a 6600k, a z170 motherboard and a 6 GB 1060 is the best choice and would actually be cheaper overall in the long run. If you have the ability, please don't cheap out on the core components at this stage.

These are my component choices for a mid tier all-purpose machine. You can shave off around $150 if you skimp on the storage and the memory and get a cheaper PSU.

Best of luck.

@Trafalgar747 - any CXm PSU with a 450/550/650w rating is the new 2015 model which is loosely based on the RMx series is not to be confused with the 2012 models .

They're good psu's, good quality, good performers , 5 year warranty.

Vice versa the 750m also if it has a silver / black badge rather than the old green/white/black label.

I'm not sure I'd pay $65 for one when an evga b2 is the same kind of money but they are very good units.

I absolutely would take a cx450m over the seasonic 430 though without any hesitation.
Dc-dc conversion , 448w 12v , modular cables & a 5 year warranty as opposed to a very old seasonic with a 360w 12v & a 3 year warranty.
If other firms produced a 430w unit with only a 360w capacity on the 12v they'd get ripped to shreds on mislabelling.

The reason I recommend that particular unit is it is frequently on sale. I bought one myself from amazon for $69 and If I remember correctly, it was the cheapest unit with modular cables and 650w. But he does not have to pay $80 for one for sure, that system can run on even 400w (but for more stress-free operation and lower power bills, should get at least 550).

I have done more research actually and most people say that a lowly i3 is beating an fx 8xxx. However, what they fail to mention is that BOTH the i3 and fx 8350-70 is faster in just about anything than an i5 6400. Weird.

^ yup mate , I'm not enamoured with the 6400, the low base clock for me just kills it.
Its not enough cheaper than a 6500, & its too expensive over a 6100 to make it a practical purchase.

While it looks a good performer duebto decent turbo speed I think it'll come unstuck in the future when games really demand heavy usage across all 4 cores .

The cx450m though is plenty for a 1060+ locked i5, there's 150w+ clear there with it being a dc-dc unit.

This was the kind of "getting a cheaper PSU" as in finding a better deal.
