Liquid cooling over air cooling

I bought myself a 212 evo a few months ago and a friend of mine has been using watercooling and said that it is amazing. I know watercooling is nice and everything but are there any actual benefits for casual overclocks to around 4-4.2 Ghz?

Solution

have you tried overclocking to see how your evo 212 handles it?

you should be able to reach 4.6Ghz, although under full load it will be right near the temps where you dont really want to get into (but, it will hold). This is really experimental on your part. Other people's overclocks suggest you will reach 4.6 without having to upgrade cooler

im not sure what kind...
Big air is actually better for mild overclocks than all in one liquid coolers. Where water gets fun is custom loops, which are very nice, but very expensive, in most cases you're better off just buying better equipment, but if you all ready have the best stuff, then water can add a few notches to your overclock.

yeah he has a corsair aio that goes for about 120$ CAD I believe. I have an i5-4690k and i would like to try and go for 4.2-4.6 Ghz in the future.

im not sure what kind of motherboard you got, but many support ONE CLICK overclock through Windows Utility program. My i5-3470k goes to 4.6Ghz with a click (well yes need to restart system).

I am at 4Ghz right now and my cpu temp maxes out at 58C. The thing is that i don't want to be near max temps because it starts to heat up my room after a little while under heavy load. What kind of temps can i expect from watercoolong at 4.5? A ballpark figure?

When asking a question like this it's really helpful to offer relevant info such as the CPU being cooled.

Generally speaking air cooling is perfectly capable of handling moderate overclock up to about 5GHz on CPUs like the 4690K or the 6700K.With only 3C separating their respective TDPs there isn't too much of a difference heatwise. What is helpful to know is what the CPU cooler is capable of. The 212 is a 180W cooler. It is capable of wicking away up to 180W worth of heat. My 4690K is an 88W CPU. In short it's easily capable of handling your proposed mild overclock. I'ts been too long since I purchased my 4690K. I overclocked it up to 4.2GHz(3.6GHz stock). The 212 handled the mild overclock fine but I can't remember exactly what my temps were.

Closed loop coolers are more about low profile cooling then they are about being better suited for extreme overclocking. Custom loops are better suited to extreme overclocks. Then there is the dry ice/liquid nitrogen....

Bottom line? Your 212 should be okay with that overclock. I say should because I don't know your CPU's base clock.
