I'd personally take the RX 480 over the I5 since your CPU is sufficient enough. It's not the greatest but you'll see the post performance gain from the GPU. Just dont invest into the reference or blower style GPU. Make sure you purchase the after market ones like the Asus Strix RX 480, Which is the best one you can get . Or the Sapphire..... Which has the best warranty and support option here since its the OEM for AMD just like EVGA for Nvidia. Good Luck!

I would not purchase the I3- Either the I5 Processor or the RX 480. I would not consider the I3 being an upgrade. Its still on the LGA 1150 socket ( Not Skylake LGA 1151) . Once again it's not a huge upgrade in my opinion. The A8 is a pretty capable quad core processor where as the I3 is a dual core with hyper threading. Therefore not being a true quad core. Just get the RX 480 and upgrade to the I5 down the road . Instead of upgrading your CPU and GPU a tiny bit. Like the 1050 TI isn't that much better than the 750 TI compared to the jump of the RX 480

The i3 isn't a quad-core CPU, true, but software doesn't distinguish between a core and a thread; it only sees threads. A thread may not be as powerful as a core, but it's better than nothing.

There's also the IPC factor to consider. An i3 has a considerable advantage when it comes to per-clock performance, and most programs, including games, benefit more from a few fast threads rather than lots of slow ones.

I know but upgradin each part by just a little bit is not going to get him anywhere. I'd encourage him to get the RX 480 or something like that as he'd see the most performance gain from that over the 1050 Ti and I3 4170. I'd just like him to get the most out of his money as i know the capabilities of the RX 480 .
