If I have my monitor plugged into my laptop, can't I get it to run in the Monitor's Resolution

I fried my gaming PC so I've been downgraded to a HP Envy TS 15 Notebook. My monitor is in 1920 x 1080 and I plug it into my laptop and what I see on the monitor is the laptop's resolution which is far less.

I would've been okay with this but last night I closed my laptop to go to bed and there was a blank screen on the monitor for a bit and then it started to run in 1920 x 1080!

Could there be some way I can use my laptop and be able to use my monitor's true resolution?

ditto on making your display the main one. You should be able to do your adjustments on "Adjust screen resolution". Type that into the start menu search box at the bottom. The options are pretty straight forward. You should even be able to just drag your external display into the first position.

If you made it the main display and turned off your laptops monitor.
