So I current have two 980s in SLI, but I play a few games such as Forza Horizon 3, which does not. Also games now are having minimum recommended of 4gbs, so my question is, with DirectX 12 being a thing now, I read an article that they're changing how SLI works, and that more cards will = more VRAM? The article was written two years ago, http://wccftech.com/dx12-nvidia-amd-asynchronous-multigpu/ it mentions the new Cross-Fire/SLI which is now a thing, so will two 4gb cards in SLI = 8gb in DirectX12 games? And if so, what games now are going to be DirectX12? BF1? Cus Forza will never have SLI according to people. I also realize that 980SLI is better in some older games, such as BF4, Rocket League, etc. But a 1080 is just under par of SLI in those games at 2k Ultra. So yeah, keep the SLI hoping it will soon be 8gb VRAM or go for the 1080 and eventually get another one in a few months?

SLI does not scale VRAM. That's been speculated but never proven, and with DX12 already in practice, is still yet to be proven. The only thing SLI scales is render speed.

Don't get a 1080 yet, it's not worth the money given your current specs. Wait for something like the 1080ti. If that never comes out, then go ahead and get the GTX 1080 (if you're willing to spend the money) since single card is almost always more advisable than SLI.

980 Prices weren't really dropped at all when 980Ti came out, and a 1080Ti will probably cost about 900 if it costs 200 more like the 980Ti did over the 980. I feel I should just get the 1080, and eventually get another one, because in the long run, 1080Ti or not, Ti will just cost more money, and a 1080 is already ALMOST equivelant to 980SLI in some games, idk.

I was referring to the release of the RX 490, though I did state the prices may go down just a little. Nvidia does not need to lower prices much since people will pay what they charge in general.Certainly a one card solution is preferred, just seems a shame your SLI 980 can not be utilized in more games.

I have 1080 sli and have been playing BF1 with DX12 enabled. i haven't seen any difference in vram usage between 1-2 cards and the cap is still 8gb, so the idea you mentioned I haven't seen implemented at all yet. Only difference i've seen so far between dx11 and dx12 is that dx11 works.
