Just recently i have been experiencing crashes with games that i have played many times before with no issues. The games will flicker a few times then the game freezes. I have to shut down the games in task manager. Could this issue be caused by the gpu, cpu, or psu? I recently experimented with overclocking but reset back to defaults. Temps stayed in normal ranges with the gpu and cpu.

CPU-Amd Phenom II x4 965 BE
RAM-16gb Gskill Ares
GPU-Radeon HD 7950
Motherboard-MSI 970a-G46
PSU-Apevia 680w

My best bet would be that your Tier five PSU is dying.

If you have Apevia Aspire Beast 680W then here's a in-depth review why it's such a bad PSU,

I recommend that you change out your PSU as soon as possible before it has the chance to fry your entire system.
Aim for a Tier two PSU. If you can affoard it, then Tier one.

Anything from Seasonic is great. For your system, a 500W range will do fine.

Here i suggest either a S12II-520 or M12II-520 EVO.
